Making a Difference: Twelve Who Have Answered the Call to Serve

In Meru, Kenya, life for young girls is often both harsh and challenging. Trapped in a cultural paradigm that allows rape and violence against them, they face an uncertain future with little hope of escaping the brutality of their day-to-day existence. The Brenda Boone Hope Center Foundation is determined to change that.

Although the organization is not yet two years old, it has already rescued more than sixty girls through programs offering boarding, walk-in support, legal assistance and vocational training.

The group’s founder, Brenda Boone, knew very little about the plight of young women in Africa when she first encountered Ripples International-a group dedicated to helping children with AIDS. Her company’s donation of a computer was the catalyst for a series of synchronistic events that led to the construction of a center of hope. “There are no random acts,” she explains. “We know we’re all connected. Our lives intersect with each other, whether it’s here, there or anywhere in the world.” Boone says she is often reminded of a line from Schindler’s List: “Bad things happen when good people do nothing.”

The program has two parts: the rescue center and the vocational training school. Currently housed in a leased property, the group’s goal is to purchase land and build a facility of its own. The “hope” in her center is focused on creating a nation of strong girls, she says.
